Emory & Henry College celebrated the life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, January 16, by providing students, staff and faculty an opportunity to learn more about civil rights, race relations and the experiences of minorities who face discrimination in America. At the Emory, Va. campus, multiple engaging presentations and interactive breakout sessions were held on campus throughout the day in a program that called on attendees to "Be the Face of Change."

Emory & Henry College got a boost to support local and regional history preservation in Southwest Virginia thanks to recent funding from the Roller Bottimore Foundation. "The Watershed Project: Civic Memory for a Citizenship of Place" has a two-fold purpose - to preserve, index, and archive a wide range of historical material related to the history and operation of Emory & Henry College, the oldest institution of higher learning in Southwest Virginia, and to utilize these materials to create an engaging, dynamic, born-digital, open-source history of the region of Southwest Virginia and, more specifically, the college's role as an institutional citizen of that place.

Dr. Oleski Miranda Navarro, Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies at Emory & Henry College, provides an anthropological view of how the oil industry in rural Venezuela has destroyed his hometown.

Dr. Mark Finney, Professor of Media & Communication at Emory & Henry College, analyzed more than 700 articles published by major news outlets to better understand how media interventions can both negatively and positively affect international conflicts–in this case, between the U.S. and Cuba.

Dr. Jessica Spafford, Assistant Professor of Music at Emory & Henry College, sang songs of deep melancholy and nostalgia during the May production of Saudades Do Brasil, a concert in a series celebrating the years of Brazil's independence produced by Project 88 in Berwyn, Illinois.
