Emory & Henry offers Certified Nursing Assistant course in partnership with Ballad Health

The Pre-Health Program at Emory & Henry and Ballad Health have partnered to offer a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course to students at Emory & Henry.

The course will help support the healthcare needs of the region and provide opportunities for students to gain valuable hands-on patient care experience while completing their degrees. Upon completion of the course, students are eligible to sit for their state certification exam.

“It is nice to be able to offer the class on-site to minimize stress on student schedules,” says Beth Funkhouser, Clinical Assistant Professor. “Having to travel to Johnson City or Marion to take the class at a Ballad Health facility has historically been a barrier for many. We hoped by being able to utilize our healthcare learning spaces on campus we could better serve the community and our students by offering a more convenient pathway to earn the CNA credential.”

The course consists of 80 hours of in-class instruction and at-home project work and 40 hours of supervised clinical experience that is completed at Francis Marion Manor in Marion.

“It is a wonderful experience to be fully immersed in team-based care as a CNA,” says Funkhouser. “You really do see it all and can gain a much deeper understanding of the needs of our community and the greater healthcare system.”

The six students in the inaugural cohort of the CNA course completed their coursework on November 23, 2020.

“There are many openings for CNAs in our area and the demand is only increasing,” says Funkhouser. “This is one way that we can help supply well-trained, enthusiastic CNAs to Ballad Health and other clinics in our area while also providing opportunities for invaluable work experience for our students and their future careers.”

Any interested student is eligible to participate in the CNA course with no previous healthcare experience required. Attendance is mandatory for class and clinicals. Clinicals are scheduled to accommodate student schedules.
