Dr. D.C. Cobler Selected E&H Alumni Association for James A. Davis Faculty Award

This award is given to an E&H faculty member with a distinguished record of excellence in teaching who haas shown exceptional service beyond the classroom thereby helping to promote the good name of Emory & Henry. This award is named for the first E&H alumnus to return to E&H as a faculty member, Professor James A. Davis, E&H Class of 1845.

D.C. Cobler is an Associate Professor and Department Chair for Emory & Henry’s exercise science department. He was formerly Program Director for the Athletic Training Program and chair of the Department of Athletic Training. He previously served the college as the Head Athletic Trainer from 1997-2004, when he then took over from then-retiring Dr. Margaret Hutson who is credited for starting the Athletic Training program at Emory & Henry.

As standards and requirement for athletic training changed, Emory & Henry elected to move away from that field as an academic major. D.C. was among the most instrumental in helping Emory & Henry move seamlessly into a new major called exercise science. In this field of study, students can learn the basics needed before pursuing athletic training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and many other related fields. D.C. and his team were able to turn the disappointment of losing the athletic training major into a degree that students anecdotally call, “the best major!”

Dr. Cobler has formally served as the regional representative for the Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association (VATA) and now is actively involved as a site visitor for the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

He holds a master’s degree and an Ed.D. from East Tennessee University. He is a board certified athletic trainer, a member of the National Strength and Condition Association, and is a Basic Life Saving Instructor for the American Heart Association.

He teaches kinesiology, exercise physiology, exercise testing and prescription, and lifetime wellness.
