Joe Matthews

Director of Sports Information & Game Day Operations Athletics

Joe Matthews is the Director of Sports Information & Game Day Operations. He is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the sports information department, directing media and statistical coverage of the College’s 22 NCAA Division III teams, two Intermont Equestrian riding programs, competitive cheer & dance teams and the maintenance of GoWasps.com.

During his first seven seasons at Emory & Henry, Matthews has seen 14 student-athletes named Academic All-District® by CoSIDA, six ODAC Scholar-Athletes of the Year and three Academic All-Americans®. He has also expanded the multimedia coverage of all of E&H’s sports, with the creation and expansion of the ‘GoWasps.com E-Cast’ in partnership with StretchInternet. In 2016, his football gameday program was honored as “Second in the Nation” among College Division schools by CoSIDA.

Before joining the staff at E&H, Matthews served his alma mater, Lenoir-Rhyne University, as a sports information specialist from April 2010 to May 2011. He was the official statistician for volleyball and provided game day assistance for football, basketball and softball.

Matthews was previously Assistant Sports Information Director at Carson-Newman College during the 2009-10 season. While at the Jefferson City, Tenn., school, he assisted in the redesign of the athletic website and was the official statistician for football, basketball and volleyball. Matthews was also the primary contact for women’s basketball and volleyball while assisting with football, men’s basketball and men’s and women’s soccer.

Prior to his stint at C-N, Matthews was Graduate Assistant Sports Information Director at Lenoir-Rhyne from 2007 to 2009. He served as primary contact for the women’s basketball, softball, volleyball and women’s swimming teams and assisted with the Bears’ other athletic programs including football and men’s and women’s soccer. Matthews also spearheaded the redesign of L-R’s athletic website during the early summer of 2009.

In addition to working countless Old Dominion Athletic Conference and South Atlantic Conference tournaments over the past decade, Matthews has coordinated media relations for multiple NCAA Division II Tournaments at the regional level.

In the spring of 2014, Matthews provided scoring assistance at the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championship, held at Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, N.C. The event was a homecoming of sorts for Matthews, who completed his undergraduate internship with the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn, a tournament on the PGA’s Champions Tour.

During his time as an undergraduate at L-R, Matthews served as a student assistant for two years in the sports information office. He was also the student manager for Bears’ women’s basketball program during the 2003-04 season when the team won its first-ever SAC Regular Season Championship.

Matthews is a 2007 graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sport management and earned a Master of Business Administration from L-R in 2009.

Matthews is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the Division III Sports Information Directors of America (D3SIDA) and the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID). Matthews has been previously involved with the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) and served as the coordinator for the Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region Women’s Basketball Teams for the 2009-10 season.

In addition to his interests in sports, Matthews also enjoys history, music and zymology. A native of Lemon Springs, North Carolina, he resides in Abingdon.
