Spanish and Civic Innovation major, Max Palmer ’17, conducted a project that’s field research was conducted outside of the college, some of it was even conducted in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. He explored the mysterious prejudices between Dominicans and Haitians, working to define racism on an island where white european descent has for a long time been the minority.

Collins House is the oldest academic building on campus that is still on its original foundations. It has served as a president’s house, a faculty residence, a student residence hall, and it currently serves to house the Appalachian Center for Civic Life.

August 8
Nearly 430 new Emory & Henry College students spread across Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee to 21 different service locations to join in on the 26th annual Service Plunge on Tuesday, August 8. Service Plunge is a time-honored tradition at the College that is organized by the Appalachian Center for Civic Life, in which teams of students and faculty coordinators serve various locations, most of which represent a theme of their first-year courses.

Emory & Henry College is excited to announce the grand opening of its first on-campus thrift store located on the lower level of the Memorial Chapel on February 1, 2023. The Emory & Henry community celebrated the new E&H Thrift Store with a ribbon cutting and students in attendance had the opportunity to shop after. The store was made possible by the Appalachian Center for Civic Life and will be primarily managed by Bonner Scholars and Civic Leader Scholars.

The Emory & Henry College Civic Innovation Department will be prominently featured in a case study on AAC&U’s website as an institution that successfully uses a civic lens to enhance the design of the major.
