Seymore Excels During Summer ROTC Training Camp

Cadet Zane Seymore, E&H senior from Glade Spring, Va., spent a month this past summer at Fort Knox, Ky., completing the Army’s ROTC Advanced Camp. A 31-day training event, the Advanced Camp is designed to assess a cadet’s ability to demonstrate proficiency in basic officer leadership tasks. They are mentally and physically tested during a 12-day consequence driven field training exercise that replicates a combat training center rotation.

Training is complex, challenging and rigorous and is conducted in a stressful training environment.

Cadet Seymore finished in the top 25 percent of more than 6,000 trainees. Based on his performance, he was invited to participate in the highly selective Cadet Troop Leader Training (CTLT) later in the summer at Fort Lewis, Wash. In this program, cadets serve with active duty Army units as platoon leaders.

“I developed leadership skills, not only through working with other cadets I hadn’t met before, but also using infantry tactics for evaluating our leadership skills,” says Seymore. “At CTLT, I had the opportunity to see day-to-day operations of a platoon leader.”

Upon graduation with a degree of their choice, ROTC students will be commissioned as officers and may serve in the Army, Army Reserve or Army National Guard. The partnership with East Tennessee State University allows E&H students to become cadets and participate in leadership and physical training courses at ETSU while continuing their academic studies at Emory & Henry.
