Demands on the healthcare delivery system in Southwest Virginia were heavy even before the COVID Pandemic. Now, our hospitals and healthcare professionals have been stretched to their limits, and although cases in COVID infections have lowered, they have plateaued at higher levels than at previous times when infection rates have dropped, keeping the pressure on our healthcare workforce.

Carriger Renovation Kick-off

Through generous donor support and anticipated tax credits, funding for the renovation of Carriger Hall to serve as the home of the Emory & Henry School of Business has been completed. More than $5 million has been raised and pledged. Historic Carriger Hall, formerly a men’s dormitory, is being renovated to accommodate high-tech classrooms and a new spacious, multi-tiered outdoor gathering space for the entire campus to enjoy.

Seymore Excels During Summer ROTC Training Camp

Cadet Zane Seymore, E&H senior from Glade Spring, Va., spent a month this past summer at Fort Knox, Ky., completing the Army’s ROTC Advanced Camp. A 31-day training event, the Advanced Camp is designed to assess a cadet’s ability to demonstrate proficiency in basic officer leadership tasks. They are mentally and physically tested during a 12-day consequence driven field training exercise that replicates a combat training center rotation.

Thank You Healthcare Heroes!

Hundreds of E&H students and employees from both the Emory and Marion campuses came out to say “Thank you” to the healthcare workers at Johnston Memorial Hospital (top) and Smyth County Community Hospital in October.

Literary Festival Celebrates Appalachian Literature & Music

The 39th Annual Literary Festival was held in October in the Black Box Theatre of the McGlothlin Center for the Arts. Appalachian Literature and Music was the theme and Rita Sims Quillen was the featured author. Quillen’s new novel Wayland, a depression-era novel, was published in 2019 by Iris Press. Her latest poetry collection, Some Notes You Hold, was released in 2020 from Madville Press.

E&H and William King Museum Establish Agreement

Emory & Henry Art Department and William King Museum of Art entered into a formal partnership in October. “This unique partnership will connect our students with a professional and nationally accredited museum,” said Charles Goolsby, chair of Visual & Performing Arts Division and professor of Art. “The students, museum professionals and professional artists in the Artlab have opportunities to directly interact with each other, giving the E&H students at the very earliest points in their creative development, tangible ways to prepare for a variety of careers including digital design, museum education, curation, and exhibition design.”

Rowlett Provides Scholarships for Students in Need

The College has received a $2.3 million gift from the estate of Agnes T. Rowlett to create an endowed scholarship for students who have financial need. Mrs. Rowlett’s husband, the late Col. Allen B. Rowlett, was a member of the Emory & Henry College Class of 1935.

Powell Family Continues to Support Student Success

The Powell Family Foundation and Paul A. “Buzzy” Powell, Jr. ’68 are providing $400,000 in support of the College’s new Student Success Center. The Center will be located in the former Wiley Hall auditorium, which is currently undergoing a complete renovation. The Center will be named in memory of Paul A. Powell, III.

Record Enrollment Brings New Staff

Emory & Henry College recently welcomed its largest incoming class in its 185-year history, with a total of 436 students incoming for the fall semester in addition to more than 650 returning students. With hundreds of students coming from Virginia and the region,and more than 47% of students joining the campus from out of state and nine different countries, the College worked throughout the summer to staff a more robust Student Success Center.

The following E&H faculty and staff made presentations at the Appalachian College Association Annual Summit, “A Community of Innovation,” September 24-25 at the DreamMore Resort and Conference Center.

   The E&H Black Student Union participated in the October block party sponsored by the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Dia de los Muertos altar in Wiley Hall

Loved Ones Remembered

The Department of World Languages and students created an altar on display in Wiley Hall to recognize Dia de los Muertos—the Day of the Dead—a holiday celebrated on Nov. 1. Dia de los Muertos honors the dead with festivals and lively celebrations, a typically Latin American custom that combines indigenous Aztec ritual with Catholicism. Students participated by leaving their paintings in honor of loved ones on the altar.

  • William Perritt and Kim

    William Perritt ’85 William married Kim Henderson August 6, 2021, in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. Kim is a native of Western Colorado and manages retail operations for the Cortez Cultural Center. They share a home in Dolores, Colorado, overlooking the lake. William says they enjoy camping, hiking, and boating around the “stunning Four Corners area.” At home they “cook together and spend many evenings on the porch watching the sunset and the star-dappled night skies.” William is employed with Fastmarkets RISI as a writer and editor, analyzing pulpwood, saw timber, and wood biomass markets. “I have held the job through its many gyrations over the past 27 years.”

    Mark Arrington ’02 Mark and Laura introduced a new baby girl to their family. Helen “Ellie” Virginia Arrington was born in 2021.

  • Jenna Wygal

    Jenna Wygal ’16 Jenna is currently getting a Master of Science in Information and Library Science through the University at Buffalo. She is working as a Senior Library Assistant in Rochester, NY, and will be promoted to Collection Development Librarian in the Spring of 2022. She married Jonathan Wygal (E&H Class of 2018) in the summer of 2020. “We just adopted an Irish Setter named Murphy to round out the family.”

    Joanna Harader ’97 Joanna has written a book of Advent devotions that will be published in 2022. It is called Expecting Emmanuel: Eight Women Who Prepared the Way. Find more information about it here. Joanna serves as pastor of Peace Mennonite Church in Lawrence, KS.
