This 2022 issue of the E&H Magazine Extra focuses on the new Paul Adrian Powell, III Student Success Center and the construction of new equestrian, athletics, and student housing facilities, all part of our expansion efforts of Emory & Henry College. Our goal is to provide new first-class facilities completing the college’s academic reputation while expanding our brand to travelers on the I-81 corridor.

Dr. Michael Nowak and two Physician Assistant Studies Department students at the Emory & Henry College School of Health Sciences traveled to remote Guatemalan villages to deliver aid to hundreds of people and to practice skills related to their field during winter break 2021.

van Vlissingen Center for Career & Professional Development Offers “Backpacks to Briefcase” Event
Representatives from People Inc., Enterprise, Concord Wealth Partners, Food City, CGI, General Shale and the Virginia Department of Transportation fielded questions with senior students recently as they prepared to enter the workforce. Representatives were available to the students for networking and discussing open positions that the students could turn into careers after graduation. The inaugural lyceum event was productive, resulting in many students from the College receiving interviews at Food City’s corporate offices, CGI federal consulting and Enterprise holdings.
E&H Claims Advertising Awards
Emory & Henry College staff and students claimed nine advertising and marketing awards at the 10th annual American Advertising Federation (AAF) of Southwest Virginia American Advertising Awards on Saturday, March 5 at K-VA-T Corporate Support Center in Abingdon, Va.
High Energy at MLK, Jr. and DEI Week of Awareness
Keynote speakers included Lydia X. Z. Brown, a disability justice advocate, organizer, educator, attorney, strategist, and writer; Jibreel Khazan (Ezell Blair, Jr.) the last surviving member of the Greensboro Four and graduate of Howard University Law School in Washington, DC and Massachusetts University in Dartmouth; and Jenna Lyn, M.D., MHA Ballad Health.
33rd Annual B.G. Raines Forum
Guest lecturer for the education forum, Becky Haas, brought an exceptional combination of first-hand experience, and an in-depth knowledge of the science of supporting trauma-informed approaches in education. ‘What she has accomplished in Johnson City, Tn. serves as one of the most dramatic examples of how a trauma-informed approach can change a community,” said Sandra Frederick, Ed.D., Education Department Chair.
Women’s History Month Celebrated
Emory & Henry College enjoyed a month full of events during March to celebrate and honor women, their struggle and their achievements. Women’s History Month has been observed at the College annually since 1987.
New Leadership Program Receives $50,000 Gift from Holston Foundation
Students in the region and on campus will now have a new opportunity to develop key leadership skills in the area of diversity, equity inclusion, civic engagement, and social justice at Emory & Henry College due to a generous gift of $50,000 from the Holston Foundation.
School of Nursing Welcomes Inaugural Class of Nursing Students
Ten Emory & Henry College students pledged a commitment to ethical and compassionate care during a White Coat ceremony held at the McGlothlin Center for the Arts with college leadership, faculty, friends and family members in attendance.
Healthcare Career Camps Encourage High School Healthcare Hopefuls
Emory & Henry College will host the fourth annual Healthcare Career Camp for three weeks in the summer of 2022 with remote and in-person sessions across southwest Virginia designed to prepare high school students for a diversity of healthcare careers. Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program Earns Accreditation
Emory & Henry’s new Bachelor of Science in Nursing program has earned accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
School of Business Sponsors Business Challenge Entrepreneur Award
As part of the 2022 Washington County Business Challenge, Emory & Henry College, for the fourth time, is sponsoring an award. The E&H Entrepreneur Award is $5,000 and includes the opportunity to send three employees of the organization to Emory & Henry’s Small Business Growth program. Worth $3,000, the program provides entrepreneurship education that sets the standard for excellence in connecting purposeful liberal arts with transformative business knowledge.
First Bank & Trust Company Presents Check to School of Business
First Bank & Trust Company presented a check to the Emory & Henry College School of Business for $50,000.The gift will support programs and internships.
Larmore Poetry Series
The featured speaker for the Catherine Burns Larmore Poetry Series was Safiya Sinclair. She was born and raised in Montego Bay, Jamaica and is the author of the memoir How to Say Babylon, forthcoming from Simon & Schuster. She is also the author of the poetry collection Cannibal, winner of a Whiting Writers’ Award, the American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Metcalf Award, the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Poetry, the Phillis Wheatley Book Award, and the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry. Cannibal was selected as one of the American Library Association’s Notable Books of the Year and was a finalist for the PEN Center USA Literary Award, as well as being longlisted for the PEN Open Book Award and the Dylan Thomas Prize.

Tommy Britt ’02 Tommy works at George Mason University, and attended Ohio University for graduate school. He has been promoted to Full Professor at George Mason University.
Israel O’Quinn ’02 In May of 2022, Israel was named by the Virginia Chamber of Commerce as the Legislator of the Year.
Lori Bruce Hutton ’08 Lori is serving as the assistant principal at Marion Senior High School. She recently was awarded the Smyth County School Board award for “Mover of Mountains.” They just started a reward system for cafeteria staff, bus drivers, and any staff member “who has good attendance, makes a difference in students’ lives every day, goes above and beyond the call of duty, has good staff relations, good job performance, and is a difference maker.” The Board voted on 13 nominations.
Will Gibbons ’03 Will was recently appointed Dean of the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam. Crane is one of the oldest and most prestigious music programs in the US, and trains approximately half of all music teachers in New York state.
Joanna Harader ’97 Joanna has written a book of Advent devotions that will be published in 2022. It is called Expecting Emmanuel: Eight Women Who Prepared the Way. Find more information about it here. Joanna serves as pastor of Peace Mennonite Church in Lawrence, KS.
