Scholarship Honors Beloved Professor

Dr. George Treadwell came to Emory & Henry in 1970 to teach biology and, across the many years of his career at the College, he impacted numerous people. But perhaps none as vivid or lasting as the influence he had on E&H alumnus Dr. John Joyce (’72).

Fleet Trains in National Program

Dr. Christine Fleet, E&H professor of biology, was chosen to attend a training session with the Genomics Education Partnership, where she learned from biology faculty from around the country.

“I was able to bring tools back that will let students use genomics databases to interpret genetic information related to the insulin signaling pathway in fruit flies, and potentially have the opportunity to publish their results,” said Fleet.

Plans for Return to Campus Underway

Emory & Henry has announced plans to return to in-person learning on August 16, 2021 with a normal academic calendar, increased face-to-face instruction and recreational campus activities.

The B.G. Raines Forum Improves Education in the Region

“For 31 years, the B.G. Raines Education Forum has brought exemplary educators and leaders from all regions of our nation to Southwest Virginia,” said Dr. Sandra Frederick, E&H Education Department chair. “The speakers provide our local educators and community partners with insights into student learning, current educational research, and sound teaching pedagogy that can immediately be taken back into our regional schools.”

Mass Communications Students Gain Industry Experience

Students from three Emory & Henry mass communications classes developed media materials – audio PSAs, a press kit and a PR package – for several Southwest Virginia Federally Qualified Health Centers to raise awareness for colorectal cancer. “The quality of the students’ products were top notch,” said Jaime Zoellner, associate director of the University ofVirginia’s Cancer Center Without Walls.

Chamber Honors E&H Employees

Allison Mays (’95), senior advancement officer for Major Gifts and Planned Giving at Emory & Henry was elected president of the Washington County (Va.) Chamber of Commerce.

Students Guaranteed Placement in Post-Grad Programs

Emory & Henry College has signed an Articulation Agreement with the University of Lynchburg that will give a qualifying Emory & Henry senior majoring in Exercise Science a guaranteed spot in the University of Lynchburg’s Athletic Training graduate program.
Virginia Living Top Schools & Universities 2021

Emory & Henry Ranks Among Top Colleges in Virginia

Emory & Henry College has been awarded top ranking status for Best Colleges in Virginia by Intelligent.com, a higher education resource guide. Intelligent.com analyzed 189 schools, on a scale of 0 to 100, with only 48 making it to the final list. The ranking takes into account the College’s performance in areas such as curriculum quality, graduation rate, reputation and post-graduate employment. In addition, Virginia Living magazine recognizes E&H on their Top Schools and Universities 2021 list.

Students Volunteer at Migrant Health Fair

Anna Fuller, a senior at Emory & Henry who interned at the Southwest Virginia Community Health Systems, Alianza de Salud, asked her fellow Spanish students to volunteer at the drive-through health fair in May. Community members received free health screenings and other health services.

Creativity Propels Student Projects

“The student performers have adapted to this project with patience, creativity and a willingness to tackle new challenges,” said Kevin Dudley, assistant professor, head of design and production in the E&H Theatre Department.

Students Participate in “Shaping Our Future”

E&H students and faculty joined more than 35 colleges and universities to take part in the nation’s largest deliberative democracy event for young people. The virtual event hosted by Stanford University, Berggruen Institute, and Equal Citizens brought 1,500 young people together for democratic deliberation, rather than partisan debate.

Hope Awards 2021

The Appalachian Center for Civic Life honored individuals and organizations in the region for their service to the community and the College at the 20th annual Hope Awards on Monday, April 26. The following were honored:
