College Community Club sponsors
Annual Emory & Henry Arts & Crafts Fair
November 1-4, 2023
The College-Community Club of Emory, Virginia promotes the mission of Emory & Henry College and the cultural, educational, social interests and improvements of the community. The membership of the Club is open to employees of the College, members of the Washington County, Va. community and others in the area. Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Club may contact any member of the Club or email ehccommunityclub@ehc.edu.
The College-Community Club was first organized in 1896 and has since been a strong voice for and supporter of Emory & Henry and the surrounding community. The Club meets monthly for educational programs and to conduct the business of the organization.
A highlight of the Club’s activities is the annual Arts & Crafts Fair held on the campus each fall. The Club proceeds of this and other fundraising efforts go to support special projects which include an annual endowed scholarship for a student from Patrick Henry High School to attend Emory & Henry, upkeep of the historic Tobias Smyth House, programs for students at Emory & Henry and special projects for the College.
The contributions of the Club over the years are remarkably varied, as you can see from the history summarized below. Most notably, the Tobias Smyth House was saved from demolition on its original site by the Club. Members paid to have the structure taken down and reconstructed on the Emory & Henry campus. Club members sponsored many fundraisers and made thousands of surgical bandages during World War II. Please read on for more.
June 26, 1896 was the date of the first meeting of a small group of women in the Emory community who called themselves the Emory & Henry Library Improvement Association. This original Club was organized by the wife of the College President at the time, R. B. Waterhouse. Mary Waterhouse was an aggressive, creative woman for that period. She was clearly involved with her husband’s role and had Club members participating in any College situation that needed helping hands.
Beginning with a candy sale that netted $4.60, these women raised almost $3,000 over the next three years. Projects included oyster suppers, ice cream socials, Club-sponsored debates, public lectures, and loaning money to the College at 6% interest. They even requested the proceeds from the Christmas Day marriages performed by a Bristol minister, known as the “Marrying Parson.” He met the incoming trains and took young couples across the Tennessee state line to marry as Tennessee had no age requirement then.
In 1901, the Club changed its name to Homemakers Band, and set out to promote Christian ideals in the home. During that time they contributed to the construction of the west wing of Carriger Hall by firing a kiln for bricks made from clay found on the campus. They also donated $1,478.79 worth of seats for the building’s chapel. In 1906, the Club changed its name again and became The Needle, which was purely a social group.
In 1918, they merged with another club on campus and became the Woman’s Club and College Aid. In 1921, they joined the Federation of Women’s Clubs and had a strong affiliation with this international organization for many years. The College-Community Club name was adopted at this time. Members of the Club voted to discontinue the membership with the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in 2002.
Tobias Smyth House
In the early 1920’s, Club members took on the ambitious project of moving the Tobias Smyth log house. This structure, located on a nearby farm, was the site of the first meetings that led to the founding of Emory & Henry College. The log house faced demolition until the women accepted the challenge of having it torn down, logs numbered, and reconstructed on the campus. Upon completion in 1927, the house was “dedicated to the spirit of the pioneers whose intelligent foresight, untiring zeal, and sacrificial labor made possible the founding of Emory & Henry College.” The Tobias Smyth House has served as the Club’s meeting site ever since.
In 1983, the House was registered as an historical landmark. Club members solicited funds for major renovations that were undertaken in 1996-98, including the roof, kitchen, bathroom, and an update to the heating and air conditioning system. A ramp to the kitchen was added by the College. For a number of years, the Tobias Smyth House was included on the Virginia Highlands Festival Tour of Homes and the Washington County Historical Society’s Christmas tours. In 2013, the House was moved approximately 200 feet west to make room for the McGlothlin Center for the Arts. Following the move, grants from the organizations listed at the end of this article* were used to refurbish portions of the Tobias Smyth House for greater utility and accessibility.
The College-Community Club continues to assist Emory & Henry in maintaining this important historic structure, including resuming its use as a meeting and rental site at an Open House held by the Club on October 8, 2016.
Service to the College and Community
Club members have provided a variety of services to students and the College, including social and religious activities, dinners, enrichment programs, and personal assistance. In the early years, many nurturing tasks were offered, including mending and sewing on buttons. During the 1920’s, the Club focused on campus beautification, planting thousands of bulbs, many shrubs and trees, an orchard behind Weaver Hall, and Japanese Cherry trees behind the administration building.
During WWII, the Club women met four times a week to make thousands of surgical bandages, sweaters, and other items needed by servicemen. When the Navy V-12 program came to Emory & Henry, the women made semaphore flags, arm bands, and other items to contribute to the program.
Through the years, as college financial needs arose, the College-Community Club (CCC) focused its efforts to meet those needs. Funds were given to furnish the infirmary and purchase baseball equipment. Members helped establish a school for the children of the nearby Blacksburg community. The CCC took orders and sold Homecoming corsages, held card party fundraisers, cared for the Confederate part of Holston Conference Cemetery, and hosted welcoming teas for freshmen girls. The Club also entertained patients from the Southwestern State Hospital.
A scholarship fund for a student from Patrick Henry High School who wishes to enroll at Emory & Henry was created in 1972. The scholarship money was added to the College’s endowment in 2007. In 2020, the fund reached the required level to be a stand-alone endowment. A formal endowment agreement signing ceremony was held on March 12, 2020, establishing the College-Community Club Endowed Scholarship. Recipients are chosen by the Financial Aid Office and are invited to the Club’s annual Christmas dinner as well as other occasions.
In 1997, the CCC voted to accept the E&H Arts & Crafts Fair as its major annual fundraiser. The Craft Fair had previously been managed by the Dean of Students Office. The Club continues to be active in contributing to community outreach programs and organizations. Annual gifts are made to Meadowview Elementary School, Glade Spring Middle School, and Patrick Henry High School for student needs. The Club provides funds for one of the Hope Awards given by the Appalachian Center for Civic Life, in recognition of notable community service by an individual or organization at E&H or in the region. Past support has been given to the Glade Spring Life Saving Crew, Meadowview Fire Department, Friends of Washington County Library, Crossroads Medical Mission, and the Meadowview Health and Literacy Clinic.
In 2014, the Club developed a new award, the College-Community Club Special Project Grant, to be presented to an organization, department, or an individual at Emory & Henry in response to a proposal submitted to the Club for a particular need. Recipients to date include the Office of Career Services, the Emory & Henry College Marching Band (band uniforms and a drum major stand), the McGlothlin Center for the Arts (usher vests), and the Appalachian Center for Civic Life (document scanner for digitizing material in Archives).
In recent years, the Club has given attention to the international students attending Emory & Henry. In coordination with the Office of International Education, members have prepared welcome baskets for new and returning students, Christmas gifts and Valentine treats, and entertained international students, faculty, and administrators at Tobias Smyth House. Returning to their interest in campus beautification in 2021-22, members of the CCC restored a memorial flower garden around the Tobias Smyth House to honor past Club members. Future projects include improved parking closer to the House, and assisting with roof repairs and furnishings.
