Instrumentation

Chemistry @ E&H

The General Chemistry lab is equipped with Vernier instrumentation to facilitate individual investigation by each student.  Beyond the General Chemistry sequence, upper division courses make use of the following resources:

  • Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR)
  • Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS)
  • Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AA)
  • Ion Chromatograph (IC)
  • Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer (NMR)
  • Ultraviolet-Visible Spectrometer (UV-VIS)
  • High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC)
  • Gas Chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC-FID)

Specialty equipment available in dedicated research labs include:

  • Metallurgical and reflectance microscopes equipped with high-resolution cameras
  • Cincinnati Sub-Zero climate chamber with temperature and humidity control
  • Glove box
  • Spin coater, automatic dispenser, UV cure station, and ozone cleaner for thin film deposition
  • Au sputter deposition
  • High-resolution micro-mechanical test system equipped with standard fracture mechanics accessories
  • Krätschmer-Huffman apparatus (for synthesizing fullerenes and endohedral metallofullerenes)
