ScienceFest Session 1
Gender and Location as a predictor of Counselor Preference
Kiley Krug
Faculty mentor: Kimberly Baranowsky
Sometimes people are more comfortable talking to the same sex when the problem is gender specific. But just how many people and in what situations? I looked at whether or not the gender of a counselor affects a patients comfort level in disclosing information. I also looked to see if the region the person resided in also affected their comfort level in disclosing information. The results show that there may be a more even preference for males and females than originally thought.
Biosynthetic Manipulation of Hyperforin to Regulate Instant Gene Expression in St. John’s Wort
Chase Poulsen
Faculty mentor: Christine Fleet
St. John’s Wort, species name Hypericum perforatum, has proven effective as a mild to moderate antidepressant through some of its secondary metabolites. Hypericin and hyperforin are two which have been established as the active components in its antidepressant effects. With the biosynthetic pathway for both hyperforin and hypericin being established, as well as the enzymes facilitating reactions, the ability to manipulate said biosynthetic pathways became available. Precursors to hyperforin were administered with the objective of seeing an increase in overall hyperforin production. The forward reaction was monitored by evaluating the enzymatic expression in response to increased reactants. Enzymes of different pathways were compared to ACTs, a general housekeeping enzyme, with a significant upregulation being witnessed in the hyperforin pathway.
ADHD and Comorbid Disorders as Predictors of Aggressive Behavior
Mikayla Tittsworth
Faculty mentor: Chris Qualls
Using clinical data, I am looking at scores from both projective and objective testing to see if ADHD is a predictor for aggressive behavior. Previous research has indicated the need for studies using mood disorders and anxiety disorders as covariates. In this study I am using statistical analysis to assess the outcomes of ADHD alone, and combined with other disorders in order to predict aggression among young adults.
The Effects of Probiotic Yeast on the In Vitro Rumen
Alexandra Barbee
Faculty mentors: Regenia Campbell, George Argyros & Patty Graham-Thiers
Bloat in the foregut within ruminant species is common, particularly in those who are considered domesticated livestock. Increases in gas production due to consuming forage that is too rich to be broken down, causes discomfort and even medical complications in the digestive system of the animal. Methods such as medicinal treatment or gastric tubing to release pressure can be beneficial for alleviating symptoms. However, there is a lack of knowledge on preliminary measures that could be given in order to reduce the chances of bloat. We tested the ability of probiotics such as yeast to prevent ruminal tympany in an in vitro rumen model. We observed levels of gas production as well as pH changes of ruminal fluid used for testing in order to confirm that the use of probiotic yeast could improve ruminal health, and ultimately reduce the risks of ruminal tympany. Results indicated that treatment with probiotic yeast with a high concentrate feed would largely reduce the amount of gas production. This treatment was shown to be statistically significant. Future studies can further confirm such results and solidify data collected, both in vitro and in a live rumen system.

ScienceFest Session 2
Child Development Through the Lens of Adoption
Allison Cochran
Faculty Mentor: Celeste Gaia
This project explores child development through the lens of adoption and foster care. Using an intensive review of both qualitative and quantitative research, this presentation highlights current research and identifies themes associated with fostering and adoption within prenatal to adolescent development. This is an analysis of the research literature through the theoretical lenses of Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory and Urie Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Theory. The identified challenges that prospective parents face during the process of adoption play a substantial role in the well being of a child. The literature review is enhanced by interviews with professionals in the field of adoption and foster care services, which provides a more in-depth understanding of how a child in foster care may have a different developmental experience than when raised by biological parents. The end goal of this review is to bring attention to the growing problem of developmental challenges that children face in foster care and the adoption process as a whole. Finally, I identify solutions to address the challenges of foster care and adoption in order to educate the community about ways to help affected youth and prospective adoptive parents.
Antibiotic Resistance in the Enterobacteriacae of Coastal and Mountainous Equus ferus Populations
Caroline French
Faculty mentor: George Argyros
In response to antibiotic use and its environmental implications, we are exploring the prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacteria in the gut flora (Enterobacteriaceae) of two feral horse populations (Equus ferus) of Corolla, NC, and Grayson Highlands, VA. These populations have been analyzed previously in 2018-2019 for resistance to eleven antibiotics. Our additional data tests twelve common use antibiotics in veterinary medicine, but we compare samples collected in 2021 to the eleven antibiotics previously tested allowing us to explore trends in antibiotic resistance over an extended period of time, and how these trends may relate to the ecological systems around the populations. We hypothesize that the Grayson Highlands population will have a higher level of antibiotic resistance than the Corolla population due to the greater human contact and veterinary care of the Grayson Highlands population in comparison to the more “wild” nature of the Corolla horses of the Outer Banks of N.C.
Isolates of coliform bacteria from fecal samples collected in January and February (2021) are being tested for antibiotic resistance to twelve antibiotics commonly used in human and veterinary medicine. Data collected in 2018 and 2019 indicates that the Corolla population was susceptible to five out of eleven antibiotics tested, and the Grayson Highlands population was only susceptible to one out of the eleven selected antibiotics. The degree of resistance appears to correlate to degree of human contact and medical intervention and treatment. We anticipate similar trends of higher antibiotic resistance in our 2020-2021 dataset, testing twelve antibiotics, for the Grayson Highlands population because they are well-managed through the Wilburn Ridge Pony Association and continued human contact is likely contributing to their microbiota.
The Interpretation of Nonverbal Communication by Race
Elizabeth Jones
Faculty mentor: Kimberly Baranowsky
Nonverbal Communication is all communication that does not involve spoken or written words. It can include body language, facial expressions, actions, gestures, appearance, etc. These are all things that are used by people both consciously and unconsciously everyday. This presentation focuses on body language. The presentation analyzes how well participants could choose what emotion was represented in photos of both an African American Man or a Caucasian Man who were doing seven different emotional poses. Those emotions were anger, sadness, fear, happiness, disgust, surprise, and neutral. The presentation will go into how participants interpret what emotion is being portrayed by each man’s body language and will analyze if race has an effect on said interpretation. The race and gender of the participant will also be looked at.

A Place to Call Home: An Oral History of Ebenezer United Methodist Church
Taylor Hines
Faculty mentors: David Jackson & Sharon Wright
This is an Oral History Project about Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Ebenezer UMC is a historically African-American church that has served as a pillar of the African-American community in Glade Spring, Virginia. The history of the church dates back to 1880, when former slaves built the church in order to provide a place of comfort and worship in an environment that was not accepting of the communities identity. It is my hope that this project helps preserve the memory, voices, and experiences of the community that is so deeply tied into Ebenezer United Methodist so that it may be remembered as an instrumental center for culture, identity, and faith.

COVID-19 Biochemistry: Understanding the Spike Protein of SARS-CoV-2
Faculty mentor: Jamie Ferguson
COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on the global human population. It has also been the epicenter of a mountain of scientific inquiry in the past year. In this year’s CHEM 430 Biochemistry course, we used SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, as a model to learn about many different aspects of biochemistry, especially protein structure and function. These presentations are the result of literature reviews students conducted on the following questions: How does biochemistry help us to understand the nature of the risks posed by SARS-CoV-2 variants? What sort of protein engineering technology has gone into the vaccines, and why?
