What’s new at the Station
Two educator workshops available this summer.
Emory & Henry College will host two summer workshops for teachers and administrators at the Bartlett-Crowe Field Station. Space is limited, so register now by contacting Laura Hainsworth at lhainsworth@ehc.edu or Mark Hainsworth at mhainsworth@ehc.edu.
Monday, July 23, I-STEM and Design-Based Learning. Tackle a hands-on engineering design challenge and learn implementation strategies for design-based activities in their own classrooms. Participants must come prepared to design, build and get dirty! This workshop is offered to science educators at all grade levels. A $100 stipend will be offered to each participant.
Tuesday, July 24, Field Station Collaboration Opportunities. Explore the learning opportunities available for students at Emory & Henry College’s Bartlett-Crowe Field Station. Participants will tour the facility and carry out a brief ecology-based learning activity, followed by a brainstorming session on potential collaborative field station activities. This workshop is offered to high-school teachers in all fields. A $200 stipend will be offered to each participant.
Master Naturalists at the BCFS
Recently the Holston Rivers Virginia Master Naturalist training class stopped by the Bartlett-Crowe Field Station for an introduction to water chemistry and a lecture on local amphibians and reptiles, followed by a salamander walk. We found dozens of salamanders of 6 different species. The Southern Appalachian region is well known for salamander diversity, with at least 30-40 species found in the area that intersects southwest Virginia, northeast Tennessee, and northwest North Carolina.
