Child Policy

This policy pertains to Kelly Library on the Emory Campus of Emory & Henry College. Access to the HS Library at the Health Sciences campus is limited to those with access to the Marion Health Sciences Campus.

Kelly Library is available for use by all current students, faculty, and staff of the College, and by the general public. However, no child under fourteen can be left unsupervised by a parent, guardian, or parental designee in the Library. If a child is left unsupervised, the Library Staff may contact Campus Police.

The Library provides full access to the Internet for academic and research purposes without filtering its subject matter. The Library Staff does not monitor or control information accessible through the Internet and is not responsible for its content. Children under eighteen, who are not enrolled in College courses, are not permitted to access the Internet without parental or teacher supervision, or for approved research assignments such as National History Day projects.

Children who are participating in summer camps and programs at the College may be allowed to utilize the Library and its resources, if the camp or program directors have made prior arrangements with the College’s summer events coordinator and the Director of the Library. Parents, teachers, and/or camp counselors are requested to accompany the participants while in the Library. The Library Staff reserves the right to ask noisy or disruptive participants to exit the building.

Library Staff may request identification to verify the age and university affiliation of any unaccompanied young person.

Safety Concerns-Unattended Children

  • Leaving a child unattended may put the child at serious risk from strangers.
  • If an unattended child is injured or becomes ill while in the Library, the Library Staff does not know the appropriate parent or caregiver to contact in an emergency and cannot authorize medical care for the child.
  • If a child wishes to leave the Library, or leaves with a stranger, the Library Staff cannot legally detain the child, even if the parent or caregiver has told the child to remain within the Library in their absence.
