The Proffit-Vaughn Scholarship

There are many ways to support one’s alma mater, and Donna Proffit Vaughn has checked off nearly every box for Emory & Henry. She and Steve (arguably the best alumnus to NEVER attend Emory & Henry) served as members of the Parents Council, Donna was on the Alumni Board, and she has served multiple times as a member of the College’s Board of Trustees.

Steve served as postmaster for Eagle Rock, Virginia, for the latter part of his postal career, and therefore knows pretty much everyone in the community. Donna worked as the Director of Guidance in Alleghany County Public Schools, so she routinely preached about the importance of furthering one’s education. In addition to offering professional encouragement to young people, she also spent an inordinate amount of volunteer time making education more accessible to her community by serving on Dabney S. Lancaster Community College’s Board of Directors and the DSLCC Educational Foundation. Steve is currently serving as president of the Board of Directors for Dabney S. Lancaster Community College.

But with four children of their own, Steve and Donna weren’t naïve about the complication of paying for a college education. In 2009, they established a scholarship fund at E&H in memory and honor of their hardworking parents in hopes it would help provide financial assistance to families in need.

Steve and Donna have been “fixtures” at E&H events for many years: cheering at sporting events, showing support at student presentations, attending lifelong education events, and more. Their commitment to a named scholarship will insure that their names, legacy, and positive influence will be felt long into the future.

Donna and Steve say the scholarship is just evidence of their confidence in Emory & Henry. “It is an honor to be able to give back to the place that continues to offer unlimited encouragement and possibilities for the next generation of world citizens.”
