E&H Spiritual Life interns are making a splash in the community

Four Emory & Henry students are spending their summer interning with E&H Spiritual Life.

Rising sophomore Madison Harosky is working with a cooperative ministry of several United Methodist churches in Bristol, Va., while Tatum Harvel is splitting her time between both Bishop, Va. and Bristol.

“Madison and Tatum are hands-down the hardest workers I have ever seen,” says Pastor Caroline Hawthorne with Hunt Memorial United Methodist Church. “From the very first day, they jumped in with both feet and got right to work.”

The interns in Bristol have been organizing a community clothes closet, delivering meals, and volunteering at the Mission Center, all of which serve the homeless population.

Rising E&H seniors Mack Henningsen and Emilie Davis are working in Bishop, Va. with Alexander Memorial United Methodist Church.

I plan on going to seminary school after college in the hopes of becoming a minister, so working with a church that really strives to reach out into the community it resides in is incredibly inspiring,” says Henningsen. “I believe the biggest thing I have learned is how much compassion and empathy can motivate people.”

The interns in Bishop are working on three major projects - organizing a clothing mission for those in need, delivering 140 meals to people throughout the week and tutoring children in the community. They have also helped establish a social platform for the church through YouTube and Facebook.

“These interns have a servant’s heart,” says Pastor Daniel Bradley with Alexander Memorial United Methodist Church. “They have all worked very hard and have interacted with the community very well. I could never say enough how grateful I am to have had these individuals with us this summer and what they brought to the mission here will never be forgotten.”
