Lanisha Howze

Posted by Monica Hoel
It’s a good thing Lanisha Howze enjoys staying busy.

She is the Curriculum Manager for Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta. In general, her work involves reviewing courses to make sure assignments and classes line up as they should in order to cover all the goals and objectives.

But there’s more.

Lanisha is in the process of building three new programs: a doctoral program in health administration, and two new master’s programs – one is a social justice program that focuses on providing medical care to incarcerated individuals and another is a master’s of science in health informatics (a field that uses information technology to analyze and organize health records to improve outcomes).

But there’s more.

She coordinates proctors for exams that students will need to take in order to be certified( particularly tricky during Covid). She’s interacting with students, faculty, administration. She works with a summer program that acquaints students with their programs. She helps faculty members work on rubrics for class. She helps with guidelines for student projects. And there’s likely still yet more.

Lanisha is also excited about her work at Morehouse because of the sort of work to which the university is committed. “Our mission is health equity, and diversifying the healthcare workforce in order to improve health equity.” She points out that in addition to there being inequities in who receives good medical care, there is also an inequity in who is providing healthcare. And, whether we’re aware or not, we all bring certain biases to our work; so all people can be better served if healthcare workers represent a wider range of cultural experiences. “For example, health informatics is a $100 billion a year industry, with 50,000 new jobs a year: but African Americans make up only 5% of that workforce.”

So she doesn’t mind being busy since she ardently believes in the work. Plus, the environment is more enjoyable than what she was doing before. A biology major, Lanisha found herself early on working in a lab, and she figured out quickly that she didn’t love being secluded from people in a lab setting. “This is much more fun than hanging out all day with e coli!”You can enjoy a conversation with Lanisha in the WEHC archives.
