Anonymous Donor Establishes Scholarship for Annette Welch Webb

The Annette Welch Webb Memorial Endowed Scholarship

How do you say “thanks” to someone who has been a lifelong friend, the source of countless good laughs, and a model for successful professionalism? And how do you say it now that this person has passed from this life?

One of our E&H alumni found herself in this very dilemma when her friend Annette Welch Webb (E&H Class of 1967) died at age 70. She chose to say “thanks” by honoring her friend in a way that made perfect sense: she established a scholarship at Emory & Henry in her memory.

The donor wishes to remain anonymous with this magnanimous act of kindness.

The donor says she has a million great memories about Annette from college and from their adult lives as friends. Her friends actually called her “Squelch,” and when you get together with her old pals it doesn’t take long for someone to tell a great Squelch story.

And Squelch didn’t shy away from telling tales on herself. One of her favorites to tell was a confession of a huge misunderstanding that led to a funny memory on a very sad day. On Nov. 22, 1963, Squelch was in a class in Miller Hall when someone ran breathlessly to the door and shouted, “The President has been shot!” She honestly thought that the president of Emory & Henry had been shot and muttered, “Who would shoot that nice Dr. Hunt?”

Annette had a career as a negotiator and advisor helping health care firms get established and grow into successful businesses. But she is probably best remembered as a loving mom who served as president of the PTA and a Cub Scout Den Leader, and as a wife who was married to her college sweetheart for 48 years. She was a mentor and a leader in the community, serving as the first woman to chair the Church Council at Providence United Methodist Church.

And she will always and forever be remembered as a fun friend to all who knew her – sharing great stories, dancing to Motown hits, and cooking New Orleans cuisine. Her return trips to the Emory & Henry campus were always marked by her infectious smile, warm hugs, and tales of student days that kept everyone laughing.

The Annette Welch Webb Memorial Endowed Scholarship will provide financial assistance to Emory & Henry students who are coming to campus to make their own stories and memories. And the benefactor of the fund says that’s the perfect way for her influence to live on at their shared alma mater. “My hope is that this scholarship will go to ones who love and treasure life, who keep a bright light of joy in the world around them.”
