Charlie Phillips Named 2022 E&H Alumni Award Honoree

Posted by Monica Hoel
Charlie Phillips, E&H Class of 1960, has been named the 2022 recipient of the Carl and Ruth Looney Humanitarian Award.

When Charlie Phillips retired from his legal practice in Salem, he went straight to work serving the community in a pro bono capacity.

Charlie has been lauded for having completed more than 900 cases since he began to litigate cases in his retirement in 2018. Charlie was among the first attorneys in Virginia to take advantage of a relatively new program that provides insurance coverage and continuing education for lawyers who wish to retire but still serve pro bono. The program called “Transition Into Emeritus Status” (TIES) is described on the Virginia State Bar website – and Charlie is quoted there, saying he’s happy to give back to a profession that “has given him so much.”

He recently won the Lewis F. Powell Jr. Pro Bono Award, established to honor attorneys who have made outstanding pro bono contributions. It is named for the late Lewis F. Powell, Jr.; a Suffolk native who practiced law in Richmond and served on the U.S. Supreme Court.

When a fellow attorney describes the outstandingly thoughtful work Charlie is doing in his retirement, he simply states: “Charlie Phillips is the best of us.”
