Women’s History Month Celebration Plans Announced at Emory & Henry College
“This is the special time of the year designated to uplift the immeasurable contributions that women have made throughout the world,” said Rev. Sharon Bowers, Special Advisor to the President, Religious and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Initiatives. “It is an opportunity for us to make our world a more inclusive space.”
The Office of DEI is hosting Women’s History Month events including a panel discussion with women in clergy about the hardships and discrimination in their vocation on Thursday, March 3 through Zoom at 7 p.m., and a discussion with renowned civil rights activist Dr. Jennifer Nash on Monday, March 21 through Zoom at 7 p.m. Additional events include a panel with the founders of the Women and Gender Studies program at Emory & Henry. The panel discussion, “Herstory: Women and Gender Studies Program at Emory & Henry College,” will be on Tuesday, March 15 through Zoom at 7 p.m. The panel will be an opportunity to discuss gender with retired professors, fellow students and program founders.
Other events throughout the month include the weekly radio talk show on 90.7 WEHC-FM “She Walks: Women & Leadership” featuring women from the staff and faculty. “She Walks: Women & Leadership” will feature Media and Communication Department Chair and professor Dr. Tracy Lauder; Vice President for Enrollment Management and External Affairs, Jennifer Pearce; First-Year Academic Advisor Sydni Leonard; Office on Violence Against Women Grant Program Coordinator, Carly Gaskins; and Coordinator of Academic Diversity Initiatives and Co-Chair of the Sociology department Dr. Amy Sorensen. In addition, the Clothesline Project will take place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, Wednesday, March 16 and Friday, March 18 at the McPherson Center. The event offers survivors of abuse and assault the opportunity to write a message to their abuser on a shirt to be hung on campus to bring awareness to the issue of violence against men, women and children.
Women’s History Month is a celebration of women and their empowerment. Emory & Henry’s involvement with the celebration of women comes from a desire to pursue excellence for all students, staff and faculty.
