The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion celebrated Black History Month with featured speaker Dr. William “Bill” H. Turner.

Turner was born in the coal town of Lynch, Ky. in Harlan County. As an academic, he is best known for his ground-breaking research on African-American communities in Appalachia.

“We were excited to learn more about Dr. Turner’s work,” said John Holloway, Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. “Often when the general public thinks about coal mining communities, rarely is there acknowledgment of the experiences and struggles of the African-American families in Appalachia.”
