Constructing Success: Strategic Planning for Student Success

In January, incoming students participated in Service Plunge, atradition at Emory & Henry.

Representatives from People Inc., Enterprise, Concord Wealth Partners, Food City, CGI, General Shale and the Virginia Department of Transportation fielded questions with senior students recently as they prepared to enter the workforce. Representatives were available to the students for networking and discussing open positions that the students could turn into careers after graduation. The inaugural lyceum event was productive, resulting in many students from the College receiving interviews at Food City’s corporate offices, CGI federal consulting and Enterprise holdings.

Keynote speakers included Lydia X. Z. Brown, a disability justice advocate, organizer, educator, attorney, strategist, and writer; Jibreel Khazan (Ezell Blair, Jr.) the last surviving member of the Greensboro Four and graduate of Howard University Law School in Washington, DC and Massachusetts University in Dartmouth; and Jenna Lyn, M.D., MHA Ballad Health.

Guest lecturer for the education forum, Becky Haas, brought an exceptional combination of first-hand experience, and an in-depth knowledge of the science of supporting trauma-informed approaches in education. ‘What she has accomplished in Johnson City, Tn. serves as one of the most dramatic examples of how a trauma-informed approach can change a community,” said Sandra Frederick, Ed.D., Education Department Chair.

Students in the region and on campus will now have a new opportunity to develop key leadership skills in the area of diversity, equity inclusion, civic engagement, and social justice at Emory & Henry College due to a generous gift of $50,000 from the Holston Foundation.

Ten Emory & Henry College students pledged a commitment to ethical and compassionate care during a White Coat ceremony held at the McGlothlin Center for the Arts with college leadership, faculty, friends and family members in attendance.

Emory & Henry College will host the fourth annual Healthcare Career Camp for three weeks in the summer of 2022 with remote and in-person sessions across southwest Virginia designed to prepare high school students for a diversity of healthcare careers. Emory & Henry’s new Bachelor of Science in Nursing program has earned accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

As part of the 2022 Washington County Business Challenge, Emory & Henry College, for the fourth time, is sponsoring an award. The E&H Entrepreneur Award is $5,000 and includes the opportunity to send three employees of the organization to Emory & Henry’s Small Business Growth program. Worth $3,000, the program provides entrepreneurship education that sets the standard for excellence in connecting purposeful liberal arts with transformative business knowledge.

First Bank & Trust Company presented a check to the Emory & Henry College School of Business for $50,000.The gift will support programs and internships.
