School of Nursing: The Forces Behind the Programs

Laurie Anne Ferguson
Founding Dean, School of Nursing

Posted September 01, 2021

A registered nurse for 40 years, Laurie Anne Ferguson is the founding dean of the School of Nursing. Before joining Emory & Henry in the spring of 2021, Dr. Ferguson was dean of the College of Nursing and Health at Loyola University in New Orleans. Her education led her to San Francisco, Pennsylvania and then to the University of Texas Health Sciences Center where she earned her DNP.

“I’ve practiced in clinical settings including emergency room, occupational health and primary care and have been a nursing educator since 1993,” said Ferguson. “However, my research and translational practice interests are in health literacy and its impact on health outcomes. I want to improve communication in the office setting to enhance patient education and understanding in managing health care and navigating the health care system.” She also has extensive clinical experience in treating underserved populations in a rural healthcare setting and is ready to make a positive impact on the nursing shortage in this region.
