Dr. Rosemary Gray Honored with 2023 Carl and Ruth Looney Humanitarian Award
This award is given to an individual who has demonstrated special service in a volunteer or professional manner, has made unusual personal sacrifice, or has shown a long and dedicated commitment to service that benefits humanity. This award is named for Rev. Carl and Ruth Looney and their family who excelled at using humble means to achieve amazing service.
A 1968 graduate of Emory & Henry, Dr. Rosemary Gray spent more than 30 years in higher education. She served as administrator, educator, and role model. At the time of her retirement she was serving as chief diversity and inclusion officer at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas. During her tenure there, Dr. Gray worked to promote and increase diversity and inclusion through campus collaborations to support recruitment and retention of under-served and underrepresented students. She also was instrumental in helping to build the diversity of faculty and staff members.
Prior to taking the position in Texas, she taught English in the public schools, and served as an adjunct faculty member and instructor at a range of public schools, community colleges, and universities in Washington DC, Tennessee, and Virginia.
She has been a diversity consultant to public schools and city governments, and served as advisor for a task force on African American males. She has chaired university diversity task forces, advisory groups, and a committee on graduation rates for Black student-athletes.
She has also been a presenter for significant conferences, including the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME).
In 2010, she received the Louisiana Most Powerful Woman Award from the National Council on Diversity.
She holds an A.A. Degree in Liberal Arts from Morristown College, a B.A. in English from Emory & Henry, an M.A. Degree in Education from Catholic University, and an Ed.D. Degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis from East Tennessee State University.
