Alice Dow
A native of Maine, Alice Staples Dow moved with her husband to Emory & Henry College in 1947, when he joined the faculty teaching Sociology. Mrs. Dow then attended and graduated from Emory & Henry. She continued her education in the fields of business and accounting, earning her Ph.D. When Dr. Dow retired from Emory & Henry in 1981, she was chair of the Department of Business and Economics.
Dr. Dow was known in the Emory community for her garden, her love of the outdoors, and her blueberries, which she had transplanted from Maine. She was very frugal, practically inventing the practice of “reduce, reuse, and recycle.” She and her husband built their own home, reusing materials from other structures. Saving against a “rainy day,” Dr. Dow was gifted in making shrewd investments. A careful steward and tither, Dr. Dow was a generous supporter of the Emory United Methodist Church. She believed in helping those around her who were hurting. At the time of her death in 2011, Dr. Dow was the single largest private financial contributor to the Meadowview Health Clinic and Community Center.
