Josh Mancuso: Professional Smack-Talker

Posted by Billy Chandler

Josh Mancuso has moved from behind the camera to the spotlight in front of the lens – and he’s remarkably comfortable there.

Josh learned to love video creation in college as a mass communications major – so much so that he formed a video production company not long after he graduated.

But something amazing happened a couple years ago: he did a little comedy video that ended up with nearly 210,000 views. Fans encouraged him to do more, and the rest is, as they say, history.

Much of his comedy focuses on sports, and he is particularly well-known these days for a series of short sketches where he carries on conversations about college teams and sports mascots with other characters – all played by Josh. The fast-paced dialogue includes a lot of smack-talk about “the other team,” but Josh seems to have found the sweet spot that will make people laugh without making diehard fans angry. He says sports is a place to escape, so he keeps the chatter light. “It’s supposed to be fun! I want people to walk away from one of these videos feeling good, not feeling bad.”

His videos are getting millions of views across all platforms, and he is getting the attention of some big-name followers. It has been a little surreal for him to realize that NFL standouts and MLB players are following him on Instagram. “It’s cool to see they’re following me…because I’m thinking, ‘No, I’m following YOU!’”

Some of these videos have to be scripted, filmed, and edited within about 24 hours in order to be relevant. Take for instance the work he did during the March Madness games where results happen fast and he couldn’t afford to miss that window of opportunity.

These days it seems the world is opening up for him. He’s just completed work as an actor in a feature film, and has another one on the horizon. He’s launched a new podcast. He’s acting in commercials. And, still a filmmaker at heart, he’s developing television and movie projects.

Some of the freedom to pursue new projects has come from sponsorship money that has given him the support he needs to really focus his creativity on new ideas and growth. He’s particularly clever about finding financial partnerships that are mutually beneficial. One of his collaborators is a company called Smack Apparel. “We’re a perfect fit! Their shirts are literally talking smack about other teams, so they found my videos and were like, ‘Ok we need to work together!’”

He’s incredibly busy these days, but he is loving the work. He says it’s meaningful to feel like he now understands what he was created for: making people laugh. “I get messages from people who say they were having a bad week and watching my videos made things better. Sometimes I underestimate that there’s power in making someone laugh.”

You can hear Josh talk about how he creates these now-famous videos in an interview on the Duck Pond Wall podcast. And don’t miss the part where we find out which team he cheers for when the cameras are off.
