Missy Jones Is Doing “Wicked” Business

Missy Jones is now the proud owner of Wicked Thrift, a thrift store in Cape Cod where Missy has worked since she was 15 years old.

A member of the Class of 2019, Missy was a Mass Communications and History double major at E&H. She worked behind the scenes at WEHC-FM, and landed a spot at a commercial radio station after graduation; she actually did the sound check for the job, essentially interviewing for the job, in Emory & Henry’s own Studio B while on campus for homecoming. This was exactly the job she had always wanted, but she never imagined that she would actually be on-air – she wanted to do the same “behind the scenes” work she had done at WEHC as a student. Missy got the job, and soon learned she’d be an on-air personality. “I was a Sunday morning DJ, I was helping with production, I was kinda doing everything I thought I was going do.”

Even while working in radio, Missy continued to work at Wicked Thrift on the side. In fact, she was working there when she got the call telling her that she would be laid off from the station as part of a round of layoffs precipitated by COVID. She was grateful for the job at the thrift store.

She was driving home from Homecoming in 2022, and discussing with her partner how hard the work at Wicked Thrift had been lately: the owner was living out of state so logistics were just complicated. She mused that “something had to give…” and ironically, the owner called her the next day to see if she wanted to buy the store. “When I said [something had to give] in the car ride, I didn’t mean the day after!”

This is definitely not what Missy saw herself doing with her degrees in Mass Communications and History, but she is mindful that she is actually using both degrees in her new role as a business owner. She uses her mass communications daily to promote the store, and she’s even able to generate excitement over her merchandise by throwing in origin stories (ask her about the history of shoulder pads in women’s clothing!). “All of those skills that I’ve learned in college, and with my professors, I didn’t throw those away…I am just not working for NPR.”

She feels what most follows and stays with her from her experience at Emory & Henry (besides Dr. Mark Finney, a Mass Communication’s professor at E&H) is “the ability to problem solve and just keep going.”
