Spencer Mathis: An Attorney Seeking Joy for Others

Posted by Billy Chandler

Creating joy and opportunities for others is just a way of life for Spencer Mathis.

Spencer Mathis laughs in that delightful way he does when he recalls giving the Emory & Henry senior orator speech at his graduation in 2015. “Remember I turned around and got a selfie with the crowd? I was the first one to do that!”

Spencer is now the lead attorney at a the Siemon Law Firm in Atlanta, and he hasn’t lost his love for creating the same sort of joy he created with that memorable selfie. He is in family law, and he says he doesn’t like the term “divorce lawyer” because there’s so much more to it. “I like to say my job is to create a positive transition for families – for the spouses, for the children, for everyone involved.”

Spencer’s road to being a lawyer was born of him being in trouble – with his mom. He was playing baseball in the house, broke a vase, got in trouble, and was forbidden to play with a baseball in the house. He agreed that he absolutely would not play with a baseball in the house again. Once he got out of detention, he took a plastic Easter egg, rolled it in duct tape, and fashioned a make-shift ball that he proceeded to play with in the house. When his mom came down on him, again, he pointed out that technically it was not a baseball.

That’s when she suggested that he might want to take his clever arguing ability to law school.

Ironically, while a student at Emory & Henry he fell in love with the idea of becoming a marriage counselor. He says no one in his family has ever gotten a divorce, and he had a couple of sociology classes at E&H that really piqued his curiosity about why some families find it so difficult to stay together. He wondered if he might be good at helping people mend a marriage, but he came to believe his skills would be better utilized in helping families in crisis.

He is very involved in his community – coaching sports, serving as a judge for high school mock court – and Spencer doesn’t take lightly his responsibility to others. Spencer says, “I always had someone helping me out and it seems it’s in my heart to create those opportunities for others. We all have a date…a date when we will no longer be here and we want people to say, ‘Job well-done.’ We have a deadline and we might as well do everything we can before it!”

Listen to a joy-filled conversation with Spencer on the Duck Pond Wall, and don’t miss the story of him getting trouble in Spanish class!
