Finding French Roots

Tim Fields is part of an organization seeking out the early French influences of the City of New Orleans.

Recently, Tim Fields (re’89) traveled to France as part of a delegation from The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC). The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC), founded in 1966, is a museum, research center, and publisher dedicated to preserving the history and culture of New Orleans and the Gulf South. Their office is housed in an historic building on Royal Street in the French Quarter of New Orleans. It serves as office space and also as a museum.

The trip to France coincided with the 300^th anniversary of New Orleans. According to THNOC President and CEO, Priscilla Lawrence, the entourage spent a week in France to “discover the traces of Franco-American relations and the French influence in New Orleans.”

Tim says the trip was the perfect way to support the current exhibit at the THNOC museum regarding the French influence on the origins of New Orleans – a city established by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville in 1718. “Although this made my seventh trip to Paris, I have never seen her like this before. It was fascinating to learn of so many connections between buildings, residences, chateaus, and people and New Orleans on this her 300th Anniversary. Of course, Emory & Henry helped to teach me that my education is never complete and we all can strive to learn more, especially through travel and study.”
