Pulitzer Prize-Winner Preston Gannaway Exhibits Documentary Photography

Pulitzer Prize-winning documentary photographer and artist Preston Gannaway exhibited in the McGlothlin Center Art Gallery from Nov. 12 through Dec. 8. The exhibit focused on intimate stories about American families and marginalized communities while addressing themes such as gender identity, class and our relationship to the natural world.

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea is a documentary project on the changing character of a working-class seaside community located along the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. The work explores residents’ relationships to the natural environment and an American neighborhood that has become a collision of class.

Gannaway also gave an Artalk to the Emory & Henry community, discussing her work and welcoming the public during a post-talk reception in the Gallery.

Gannaway’s photographs have appeared in popular publications such as The Atlantic. Her photos are published in a book and are the subject of a feature-length documentary both titled Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.
