Summer Apostol ’18 Interns at Museum of History and Science

Posted

She has used her knowledge of project based learning, including being a showcase presenter at Ampersand Day 2017, to land her an exciting internship back in her hometown of Jacksonville, Florida at the Museum of History and Science (MOSH).

Apostol, a History and Sociology major, presented her research with fellow Museum Studies classmates to a packed theatre at the Student Showcase for Ampersand Day 2017. She has found the support and encouragement from her professors, as well as the Project Ampersand team, has strengthened her confidence in working outside of Emory & Henry College. “I have horrible stage fright, I don’t even like giving presentations in front of a class…I learned how to give a large scale presentation and that public speaking isn’t as scary as I thought.”

During her days at MOSH, Summer looks over the inventory of the museum’s permanent collection, sits in on various departmental meetings, and even started conducting research of her own. She finds her work rewarding in the sense that she is preserving the history of her hometown, but also benefits from working behind the scenes at a major museum. “The coolest perk of my internship is that myself and the museum staff always get sneak previews of the newest planetarium shows before they’re shown to the public.”

Her newfound confidence and successful internship has her thinking ahead too. “I think the most important thing my internship has done for me is given me the affirmation that I want to continue to pursue a career in museum studies, so with this strengthened confidence and direction, I hope I can make Emory proud in the future when I am running my own museum.”
