April 12 Play Explores Muslim Identity

Posted by Haley Arni

An interview-based theater production by Ping Chong + Company will be presented Friday, April 12, in the McGlothlin Center for the Arts at Emory & Henry College.

The production, “Beyond Sacred,” begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Kennedy-Reedy Theatre of the McGlothlin Center for the Arts. The play explores the social challenges faced by young Muslims – at school, at work and anywhere else.

The five young performers in Beyond Sacred hail from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds, reflecting a wide range of Muslim identities. Together their true stories create a beautiful, funny and intensely poignant cry for tolerance at a time when such sentiments are more necessary than ever.

The engagement of Ping Chong + Company is funded through the Mid Atlantic Tours Program of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and made possible with the assistance of the Emory & Henry Appalachian Center for Civic Life and the Religion Department.

Located on the campus of Emory & Henry College and just off Exit 26 on Interstate 81, The Woodrow W. McGlothlin Center for the Arts seeks to provide experiences in the visual and performing arts that enrich lives as well as public appreciation for the contributions of the arts to the region.
