Strategic Research Partnership Announced

The Emory & Henry School of Health Sciences has been selected as a strategic partner by the Federation Internationale de Powerchair Football Association (FIPFA) to lead research into evidence-based athlete classification.

FIPFA is based in Paris, France and governs competitive international soccer competition for athletes with severe physical impairments. As part of the required application to participate in the Paralympic Games, FIPFA is required to present research to the International Paralympic Committee that supports their process of athlete evaluation for eligibility and fairness.

SHS students from the Occupational and Physical Therapy programs including Casey Pherson, Blake Bohanan, Justin Currin, Anna Szpalik, Brittany Saetre, and Mackenzie Maison conducted initial research on the process this past spring and their supervising faculty member, Dr. J.P. Barfield, presented the initial work during the week of May 20^th at an international competition in Lahti, Finland. FIPFA was encouraged by the student research and has agreed to support E&H for three additional years of research as part of their Paralympic Games initiative. This experiential opportunity is an excellent blend of E&H mission-driven service and exceptional training opportunities for SHS students.
