Thomas Little

Richardson Professor of American History History

Professor Little is the Chair of the History Department and serves as director of the Appalachian Oral History Project. He holds the C. Lee Richardson, Sr., and Mahala Reeves Richardson Chair of American History.  Professor Little’s academic interests include southern history, early American history, Caribbean history, and Atlantic history.

Professor Little is the recipient of several fellowships and awards, including the John B. Stephenson Fellowship, which was awarded by the Appalachian College Association; the James Still Fellowship, a Faculty Scholars Program award given by the University of Kentucky; the Barbara Field Kennedy Prize in American History; and the Mary Hayes Ewing Publication Prize in Southern History.

Professor Little’s books include The Origins of Southern Evangelicalism: Religious Revivalism in the South Carolina Lowcountry, 1670-1760 (2013).  His articles have appeared in Church History, Slavery and Abolition, the South Carolina Historical Magazine, and the Journal of Southern Religion.  Professor Little also contributed an essay on colonial South Carolina religious life to the groundbreaking volume Money, Trade, and Power: The Evolution of Colonial South Carolina’s Plantation Society (2001).  At various times he has been an NEH Fellow, a Mellon Foundation Fellow, and Jessie Ball DuPont Fellow.

Teaching

Professor Little is the recipient of numerous teaching honors, including the Excellence in Teaching Award, the Washington County Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year Award, and the Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence.  During 2014, he served as a Colonel Lee B. Ledford Faculty Mentor.  Professor Little counts among his faculty-student research projects “Preparing for 2007,” a Jamestown quadricentennial project funded by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy, and “Oral History in Southwest Virginia,” an applied history research project funded by the Appalachian College Association.

Research

Upcoming Research:

Professor Little’s upcoming research focuses on the Church of England in colonial British America. His new book is entitled Anglican Christianization in the Prerevolutionary Atlantic World: The Church of England in the Southern and Island Colonies, 1689-1763.

Professional Experience

Since 2013 Professor Little has served as the Program Director for the M.A.Ed. program in American History.
