Lisa A. Withers

Dean, School of Arts and Sciences Music

Lisa Withers is Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Emory & Henry College where she also teaches private and group piano. Since her arrival on the E&H faculty in 2002, Dr. Withers has taught courses in music theory, music history, women in music, film music, Mozart opera and Beethoven symphonies, among others.  

Her past roles at the college have included Director of the McGlothlin Center for the Arts (2016-2018), Chair of the Division of Visual and Performing Arts (2011-2016) and Chair of the Music Department (2003-2010, 2018-2021). She previously taught on the faculties of Augustana College and Louisiana Tech University.  As a performer, lecturer, collaborator, and teacher, Lisa has presented recitals, masterclasses, and workshops throughout the Eastern, Southern, and Midwestern U.S. She is the past president of the Virginia Music Teachers Association from 2009-2011.

Her research and performance interests include 20th century French piano and chamber music, American female composers, and mindful self-compassion practices in performing and teaching. She lives in Glade Spring, VA with her children, Lucy and Carter.
