We are excited you made the excellent choice to continue your education at one of the finest institutions in the region! There are many opportunities that await you here and we would like to take a moment to introduce you to some unique opportunities we can offer you in the Department of Athletic Training!

    • Did you know we offer guaranteed admission to qualifying E&H graduates?
    • Did you know you could fast track your way to becoming an athletic trainer in 5 years?
    • Did you know there are ways to get involved and many educational paths you can take to be eligible for program admission?

    What is an athletic trainer?

    • Athletic Trainers (ATs) are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.

    Where do athletic trainers work?

    • Anywhere there are people actively engaging in life!
    • Public & Private Secondary Schools
    • Colleges & Universities
    • Clinics & Hospitals
    • Professional Sports
    • Youth & Amateur Sports
    • Performing Arts  (Broadway, Cirque du Soleil & the WWE all have athletic trainers!)
    • Military
    • Public Safety  (Fire/Rescue, Police departments)
    • Occupational Health  (Delta, Amazon, LuckStone use ATs to keep workers safe)

How do I become an athletic trainer?

    • Students who want to become certified athletic trainers must earn a degree from an accredited athletic training program. Accredited programs include formal instruction in areas such as injury/illness prevention, first aid, and emergency care, assessment of injury/illness, human anatomy and physiology, therapeutic modalities, and nutrition. Classroom learning is enhanced through clinical education experiences.
    • Soon all Professional Athletic Training Programs will only result in a Masters Degree.
    • To become an athletic trainer, candidates must graduate with a degree in Athletic Training from an accredited athletic training program (like ours) and successfully pass the Board of Certification (BOC) Exam.  To practice as an athletic trainer in most states, the individual must also be credentialed within the state.  Degrees in physical therapy, exercise science, strength and conditioning DO NOT qualify the candidate to sit for the BOC examination.

Why athletic training at Emory & Henry?

We have a strong history of a 100% Board of Certification first-time pass rate and 100% student job or graduate school placement within 6-months of graduation. Additionally, The mission of our School of Health Sciences centers on a collaborative, interprofessional environment, which means MSAT students would take classes with physical therapy and physician assistant studies students, providing them the opportunity to foster positive working relationships with other members of the healthcare team.

Within our MSAT, students will take part in whole-body cadaver dissections with physician assistant studies students during their first summer term, providing them with a strong foundation in human anatomy. We also believe our Emergency Medicine and Advanced Clinical Procedures courses will be a highlight of our program as we focus on skills beneficial to rural sports medicine, such as pre-hospital care, suturing and casting.

Guaranteed admission policy for Emory & Henry undergraduates

As an Emory & Henry student, you may be eligible for guaranteed admission into the Master of Science in Athletic Training degree program (MSAT). Prospective students would need to meet all of the MSAT admission requirements and prerequisite coursework before a seat would be reserved in the program.

The most common path for completing these requirements is through the Exercise Science major, although many majors could be utilized, such as Health and Human Performance or Biology.

Interested students should contact, Dr. DC Cobler the Athletic Training Department Chair & Program Director or any member of the athletic training faculty for more information.

Contact Athletic Training Department Chair & Program Director, Dr.DC Cobler for more information about the 3+2 option.
