Internships

Our students also gain work experience by applying the skills learned through historical study at a variety of internship sites. Students have interned at national institutions such as the Library of Congress and the Natural History Museum; around the region at the Library of Virginia and Harper’s Ferry National Park; and locally at White’s Mill and the Museum of the Middle Appalachians, among others.

Travel

History students are always on the move. Domestic trips have included visits to the Martin Luther King, Jr., Center in Atlanta and the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C.  Students also take advantage of study abroad opportunities to encounter Homer’s Odyssey in Greece, experience Renaissance art in Italy, confront the scars of the Holocaust in Poland, and engage in citizen diplomacy in Cuba.

Appalachian Oral History Project

In a collaborative, long-term initiative, students gather oral histories from throughout the Virginia Highlands as part of this comprehensive history project.

Pi Gamma Mu

The Virginia Delta chapter of Pi Gamma Mu was founded at E&H in 1929 - the year the Great Depression began! Today, we continue to have a thriving chapter that sponsors student presentations, public lectures, and research discussions. It also offers an opportunity for students to assume leadership positions and pursue interdisciplinary learning outside of the classroom.

History Day

The History Department hosts the annual district two History Day competition in affiliation with the Virginia Historical Society. This event brings high school history students to campus and provides majors with an opportunity to interact with young students and judge papers.
