Each program – music, theatre and art – offers diverse academic offerings intended to not only enhance your skills but to give you a sound understanding of the important of the arts in your life, your community, and your culture.
E&H Art students create in a stimulating environment with nationally recognized studio artists and historians. The Art Department is a leader of project-based learning and interdisciplinary engagement with portfolio development at the center of its mission. Not to mention they have the longest running study abroad program in the college traveling to Italy. Through small class sizes, individual student and faculty interaction, and a rigorous studio practice, students emerge as individual creative thinkers. They go on to teach, attend graduate school, work in design and become successful practicing artists exhibiting around the nation.
The Music Department provides opportunities for students to grow into independent, informed and creative musicians who will serve as advocates for our art in and out of the music profession. At E&H we offer the unique ability to create a highly personalized musical experience for our students no matter what their musical interests are. Students who are involved in music here have the opportunity to perform both nationally and internationally a part of our touring ensembles. In addition, they perform regularly at the McGlothlin Center for the Arts and the Memorial Chapel.
With a rapidly growing program, a variety of majors, ample performance opportunities and passionate faculty, the Emory & Henry Department of Theatre is recognized as one of the region’s finest. A unique and dynamic association with the Barter Theatre, the State Theatre of Virginia, allows students to get hands-on experience with professional theatre artists throughout their four-year degree. The department stages four main productions encompassing a range of material, including musicals, contemporary plays, classical pieces, and new or experimental works. Performances are held both at the main stage Kennedy-Reedy Theatre as well as the intimate 120-seat Black Box Theatre located in the McGlothlin Center for the Arts.
