DEI Week
The week is meant to bring the community together as Emory & Henry College considers the beauty of our differences, the challenges of treating one another with equity and the richness of shared experiences.

Emory & Henry College invites the community to participate in its Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation on Monday, January 17, 2022, in The McGlothlin Center for the Arts with keynote speakers Lydia X. Z. Brown, a disability justice advocate, organizer, educator, attorney, strategist, and writer, and Jibreel Khazan (Ezell Blair, Jr.) the last surviving member of the Greensboro Four and graduate of Howard University Law School in Washington, DC and Massachusetts University in Dartmouth.

Event Link
Dr. Jenna Lyn was born and raised in New York. She attended Howard University where she was first introduced to Public Health. She graduated with her Bachelor of Science from Southern Connecticut State University with honors. From there, she obtained her Masters in Healthcare Administration from Hofstra University, where she graduated Cum Laude. Throughout this time, she volunteered as an Emergency Medical Technician, a dance teacher, and served as a mentor to children in the New York City Foster care system, as she is a product of this system herself. She attended the University of Medicine and Health Sciences in St. Kitts - combining her love for the Caribbean with her desire to become a physician. Currently, Dr. Lyn is a Family Medicine Resident at Johnston Memorial Hospital in the Dr. S Hughes Melton Family Medicine Residency Program. After this, she plans on completing a fellowship in Obstetrics. In her spare time, Dr. Lyn enjoys spending time with her husband, daughter, and puppy. She enjoys outdoor activities, hanging out with her friends, traveling, and cooking new recipes for her family.
Lydia X.Z. Brown, Abolitionist Disability Justice Advocate, is an autistic queer and genderqueer, east Asian adoptee activist, writer whose work focuses on interpersonal and state violence against disabled people at the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, faith and nation.
Currently, Lydia is co-leading the project on disability rights and algorithmic fairness at the Institute for Technology Law and Policy at Georgetown University Law Center, and supporting the Autistic Women and Nonbinary Network’s public policy advocacy. They have been honored by the White House, Washington Peace Center, National Council on Independent Living, Disability Policy Consortium of Massachusetts, National Association for Law Placement/Public Service Jobs Directory, Society for Disability Studies, and American Association of People with Disabilities. In 2015, Pacific Standard named Lydia a Top 30 Thinker under 30, and Mic named Lydia to its inaugural list of 50 impactful leaders, cultural influencers, and breakthrough innovators. Their work has been featured in numerous community and scholarly publications, and in various news outlets including Al Jazeera, BBC, the Washington Post, CNN, Mother Jones, NPR, and NBC, among others.
Jibreel Khazan (Ezell Blair, Jr.) was born in Greensboro, North Carolina. He graduated from Dudley High School and attended A&T with an A&T College Alumni Association Scholarship. His freshman roommate was Joseph McNeil. On February 1, 1960, he, his roommate McNeil and fellow A&T college freshmen David Richmond and Franklin McCain sat down at the whites-only lunch counter in Woolworth’s in Greensboro, NC and refused to leave. This act of civil disobedience would launch other sit-ins. By July 25, Woolworth agreed to integrate its Greensboro store. The company had lost $200,000 in business during the sit-ins. He earned a B.S. degree in sociology from A&T in 1963. He studied law at Howard University Law School in Washington, DC, education at Massachusetts University in Dartmouth and voice at the New England Conservatory of Music. He married Lorraine France George of New Bedford, Massachusetts and had three children. In 2002, a bronze statue featuring him and the others of the A&T Four was unveiled on A&T’s campus. Also that year, the movie February One: The Story of the Greensboro Four aired on PBS.+North Carolina A&T Four.
