Meet the Keynote Speakers:
Brooklyn Sawyers Belk '02 Words Matter: Changing Your Race Relations through your Words.
Through a survey of United States Court decisions, we will evaluate the evolution of race relations in America through the Supreme Court’s words. With that backdrop, we will discuss how our words can change our race relations one conversation at a time so that we are the living change we want to see.
Brooklyn Sawyers Belk is a graduate of Emory & Henry College. She served on the College’s Board of Trustees as well as the alumni board. She has taught courses for the college, including teaching a constitutional law course that addresses the Supreme Court’s handling of race in America over the last 200 years, which is scheduled for Spring 2023. Brooklyn has practice law for over 16 years, including service at the United States Department of Justice as well as service as a law firm partner and chief diversity inclusion officer. Currently, she’s a visiting professor of law at the University Of Tennessee College Of Law, where she has been professor of the year twice. Her husband, Lamont, is an attorney for the Tennessee Valley Authority and visiting professor of law for Lincoln Memorial University. They have three children: Tress, Joseph, and Joshua.
Joaquin Zihuatanejo Written All Over Your Face: How a Barrio Boy Became an Agent for Change
Equal parts spoken word poetry performance, keynote speech, and interactive quick write activity is the best way to describe this experience with World Poetry Slam Champion, Joaquín Zihuatanejo. Come prepared to listen, engage, and create, but be ready to leave inspired to think, write, and live more deeply. Joaquin’s performance has been called by critics, “a display of verbal fireworks that leaves audiences enthralled. Never sacrificing substance for style, Joaquín’s manic, hilarious, and passionate performance blurs the lines between poetry, theatre, and dramatic monologue. Sometimes brutal but always honest, Joaquín is guaranteed to leave audiences on the edge of their seats and breathless.” From his early days as a dirt covered barrio boy with a pocketful of dreams and a poem that might change the world stuck in his throat to his world championships (plural), Joaquín will take you on a poetic journey that captures what it is to be desperate to change the world, and what it takes to actually be a small part in changing it.
