Our faculty are here to help you in the next step of your academic career.
Every year Emory & Henry Honors students lead the college in winning private and public awards, fellowships, and grants. Our students are encouraged and supported during their undergraduate careers to apply widely, and they have received many prestigious awards—from Appalachian College Association Ledford Scholarships to the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, as well as summer grants from such prestigious institutions as Columbia University to study Publishing and Duke University to prepare for Law school.
Our students have also received the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship after graduation.
We provide guidance on many local and national awards, such as those below:
The Davies-Jackson Scholarship is a unique opportunity for graduating seniors with an exceptional outstanding record of academic achievement who will graduate with a 3.7 or higher grade point average. The applicant should be a first-generation college student, or the student should not have benefited from their parents’ academic achievements. Davies-Jackson Scholars will be admitted to Cambridge as an Affiliated Student. An Affiliated Student is a graduate holding an approved degree from another university who is admitted to work for the Cambridge BA degree. As this is essentially a second BA, Affiliated Students take the more advanced parts of a Cambridge degree course and qualify for the degree in two years instead of the usual three. As a result of its academic rigor, the international travel opportunities that are available, and the overall preparation that the course of study provides towards a career, the “Cantab” degree is usually considered to be the equivalent of a Master’s degree in the United States.
The Morris K. Udall Scholarships provide up to $5,000 (or the cost of tuition, fees, books, room, and board, whichever is less) to sophomores and juniors who have demonstrated a strong academic record and outstanding potential for leadership. Applications are due on October 1 for scholarships for the next academic year. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit to students who fall into one of two groups: those who study the environment or related fields, and those with Native American or Native Alaskan backgrounds who study health care or tribal public policy. You must receive an institutional endorsement from Emory & Henry to apply. The Faculty Representatives are Dr. Ed Davis (Geography and Environmental Studies) and Dr. Laura Hainsworth (Chemistry and Environmental Studies)
The Ledford Scholarship offers financial assistance for summer research projects to undergraduate students enrolled at ACA member institutions. Undergraduate students from any disciplines are eligible, and a variety of fields of study have been supported in the past in the natural and health sciences, the social sciences, the humanities, and so forth, applying various methodologies, e.g., laboratory research, fieldwork, interview/oral history, archival/library research, participant observation, etc. The Ledford Scholarship provides stipends for students at a rate of $10.00/hour for up to 360 hours ($3,600 maximum) over the course of the summer and an allotment of up to $1,000 for reasonable equipment and travel needs. Applications must have the support of a faculty member who will agree to serve as a mentor to the student throughout the project.
The Fulbright Grants support graduate study and research in over 100 foreign countries. Most grants are awarded for programs of study or research that require one academic year, but the program also offers summer abroad programs for talented undergraduates. Sophomores and Juniors should consider applying to a summer Fulbright. A complete list of the programs and positions for the upcoming year can be found on the Fulbright website, and applications are generally due in late February.
To be eligible for the Fulbright Fellowship Programs, you must be a U.S. citizen who will hold a bachelor’s degree prior to undertaking the grant and must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Students who would like to undertake graduate study abroad should apply in their senior year. Fulbright Grants provide round-trip transportation, language or orientation courses (where appropriate), tuition, books, maintenance for one academic year, and limited health and accident insurance. The Faculty Representative is Dr. Scott Boltwood (English).
The Gilman Scholarship Program broadens the student population that studies and interns abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints. The program aims to encourage students to study and intern in a diverse array of countries or areas and world regions.
The program also encourages students to study languages, especially critical need languages (those deemed important to national security). By supporting undergraduate students who have high financial need, the program has been successful in supporting students who have been historically underrepresented in education abroad, including but not limited to first-generation college students, ethnic minority students, students with disabilities, and students coming from U.S. states with less study abroad participation.
