E&H Hosts Vigil for Gun Violence

On Friday Dec. 6, Emory & Henry College hosted a vigil for victims of gun violence that allowed students and community members to open a dialogue about their experiences or thoughts on guns and gun violence.

Hosted in the Memorial Chapel by student Clare Carter, the event was sponsored by Newtown National Vigil. Newtown National Vigil provides comfort, education, scholarship, support and resources to people and communities impacted by gun violence in America. Newtown National Vigil has been sponsoring a number of different vigils on gun violence across the nation in the month of December under the name #EndGunViolence. 

The event opened with student Alex Sprinkle singing You Raise Me Up, accompanied by Jerry Jones on the piano, as well as an opening prayer by Emory & Henry chaplain, Mary K. Briggs. Afterwards, a representative from the District Office of Senator Tim Kaine spoke on behalf of the Senator’s stance on gun violence and future legislation he supports. The floor was opened for students, community members, and faculty and staff to share their experiences.

After the audience’s personal stories, a moment of candlelit silence was held for reflection and reverence. Carter was proud of the event’s meaning. “The issue of gun violence is not just a political talking point. For many Americans it is a humanitarian crisis they face everyday. That is why it’s so important not only to honor the lives that have been lost to gun violence but also to come together as a community to discuss how we can help with gun violence prevention,” Carter said. “ We need to show our lawmakers that people on the right and the left believe that no more children should be affected by the issue of gun violence in the United States.”

The issue of gun violence is not just a political talking point. For many Americans it is a humanitarian crisis they face everyday. That is why it’s so important not only to honor the lives that have been lost to gun violence but also to come together as a community to discuss how we can help with gun violence prevention. We need to show our lawmakers that people on the right and the left believe that no more children should be affected by the issue of gun violence in the United States.
