Taylor Blevins ‘19, Researches Systematics and Taxonomic Status of the Nantucket Island Mouse

Blevins is researching the systematic status of subspecies of mice on Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket, and Monomoy Island by looking at non-morphological characteristics and morphological data in order to determine the systematic position of population of Nantucket Island Mice (Peromyscus leucopus fuss) on other islands off the Southern New England Coast.

This project has allowed the Abingdon, Virginia native to expand her knowledge on how to interpret morphometric and DNA sequence information. It has also given her the opportunity to work with other students as part of a team to complete a larger project.

Experimental failure and reflection have expanded her educational experience by allowing her to learn from her mistakes and share her research with others.

Blevins plans on attending a Physician’s Assistant Graduate Program.
