E&H students win big at Southwest Virginia American Advertising Awards

Emory & Henry College claimed six advertising and marketing awards at the annual American Advertising Federation of Southwest Virginia American Advertising Awards on Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020.

Allison Hamilton, Katie Graves, and Tyler Spires won in the student categories. Spires received a Gold Award for his video on the Abingdon Music Experience in the category of Television Advertising. His video was titled Thursday Jams - The Commonheart. Also in the category of Television Advertising, Hamilton won a Silver Award for her video entitled Global Street Party Video, which featured Emory and Henry’s annual Global Street Party. Graves was honored with a Silver Award in the category of Outdoor & Transit Advertising for her Save the Sharks campaign.

“It was really great to not only be nominated for this award, but to actually win it,” Spires says. “The video was a blast to make, and I’m glad that other people really enjoyed it.”

Additionally, two Emory & Henry staff members received awards. Rachael Wilbur, Web Content Manager and Chief Photographer, was recognized with a Gold Award for her Department of Theatre photography in the category Black and White/Color/Digitally Enhanced - Campaign. Leah Prater, Director of Marketing, won a Silver Award for her Admissions Deposit Packet and another Silver Award for her Travel Brochure. 

The 8th annual event took place at K-VA-T Corporate Support Center in Abingdon, Va. The American Advertising Federation is a national organization that works to advance marketing and advertising careers. The Southwest Virginia chapter represents the work of professionals in the field of advertising right here in our region. 

All three student winners are Mass Communications majors at Emory & Henry. The Mass Communications department prepares students for creative and professional opportunities. For more information, visit  https://www.ehc.edu/academics/mass-communications/.
