Emory & Henry senior Ellen Hicks combines her two passions

Our Emory & Henry seniors are preparing to graduate and change the world. 

The professional future for Ellen Hicks will likely reside at the intersection of art and communication, much in the same way that she combined these two disciplines while studying at Emory & Henry and working at the William King Museum of Art in Abingdon.

A studio art and mass communications double major, Ellen worked for the popular museum as an intern, providing graphic design, social media content and exhibition design. “I was fortunate enough to help install exhibitions at the William King Museum of Art, which allowed me to connect with artists, museum staff and the community,” she said.

Ellen also held graphic design internships with a ceramics company and a bed-and-breakfast business. She credits Emory & Henry with helping her land internships “that have played a key role in my education and plans for the future.”

After graduation, she hopes to continue working in ways that combine her two passions. “I would like to work at an art museum to help others come to know and appreciate artistic expression.”

While studying at Emory & Henry, Ellen was heavily involved in a wide variety of activities. She served as a community advisor for Housing & Residence Life; as the business manager and online editor of the college newspaper, The Whitetopper; as the altar designer for Encounter, a student-led worship service, and as a member of the E&H Honors Program and the Blue Key and Phi Eta Sigma honors societies.

“Emory & Henry provided a tailored college experience by allowing me to learn through classes, on-campus jobs and internships,” Ellen said. “By studying two majors at a liberal arts college, I maximized my experience by learning to make connections across a variety of disciplines.”
