Emory & Henry senior Chelsea Snead considers her world of opportunities

Our Emory & Henry seniors are preparing to graduate and change the world. 

An Emory & Henry study abroad experience in Japan threw open the doors of possibility for Chelsea Snead, who graduates this year with degrees in studio art and biology and who now sees her future from many “curves and angles.”

While studying at Aoyama Gakuin University in Japan in 2019, she studied the Japanese language, culture and intercultural communication. High on her list of goals now is to return to Japan to teach English and to continue her pursuit of art through the influences she has discovered there.

“I borrow a lot from various mythologies as inspiration for my art, and Japan has a plethora of legends to choose from,” Chelsea said. “I think my art became a little more loose, or ‘breezy,’ and I frequently write things in Japanese because I love the feel of the curves and angles of the symbols.”

Beyond teaching and art, Chelsea sees many other opportunities before her, thanks in large part to the experienced base education she received at Emory & Henry and its many outstanding faculty members. Other possibilities she has considered include museum administration, artist residence and the study of archaeology, combining her two degrees through artistic field sketches and scientific study.

She credits many members of the E&H faculty for helping her toward the many opportunities she now considers: Dr. Chris Fielitz, her biology adviser who taught her methods of scientific illustration that she continues to use in her art; Dr. Chris Qualls, a psychology professor who helped her make decisions toward her major; Dr. Celeste Gaia, who guided her toward her study abroad experience; and Professor of Art Charles Goolsby, who pushed her “leaps and bounds” toward excellence in her art.

“The world provides many opportunities for me that I did not consider a possibility until I came to Emory & Henry. I’m eager to see what else is out there.”
