Transfer & Transform: Kaitlyn Phibbs

When Kaitlyn Phibbs (E&H ’14) transferred to Emory & Henry from Virginia Highlands Community College, it was an easy adjustment.

“From the moment I started researching schools to transfer to, Emory & Henry was so warm and welcoming,” says Kaitlyn. “Emory & Henry offered a sense of community and belonging.”

Because she didn’t go straight into a four year school, Kaitlyn didn’t think she would ever have the chance to run competitively after high school. However, her orientation leader happened to be on the Emory & Henry Cross Country team and insisted that Kaitlyn talk to the coach.

“Deciding to join the Emory & Henry Cross Country team was the best decision I made,” says Kaitlyn. “Being a collegiate athlete was not an adjective I ever saw for myself, but now it is one that I am very proud of.” 

Now a 7th grade Life Science Teacher at Chilhowie Middle School, a Varsity Track and Field Coach at Chilhowie High School, and the co-owner/operator of Lucky Brake Driving School, Kaitlyn is thankful for her experiences at Emory & Henry and her advisors who adapted along with her as her career path changed. 

Originally an Athletic Training major, it was during the hands-on coursework of this department that she realized teaching was her true passion. She also trusted her advisors when they suggested she try the Driver Education courses.

“Because of that, my husband Steven and I now run our own driving school to serve our local community,” says Kaitlyn. “We saw starting Lucky Brake Driving School as just another way we could give back to the community that has given us so much.” 

Kaitlyn’s advice for future transfer students is to confide in your advisors. “They always knew what was right for me and led me when I was unsure of the best direction. I couldn’t have done it without them.”
