Transfer & Transform: Abigail Hathorn

Abigail Hathorn (E&H ’18) transferred to Emory & Henry from Northeast State Community College to pursue a degree in Mass Communications.

She credits Mary Bolt, Director of Transfer Admissions, with helping her through the confusing paperwork and transition. While she was looking at different schools, a professor in the Emory & Henry Mass Communications department invited her to take a tour of campus. 

“She had a few current students show me around and eat lunch with me,” says Abigail. “This helped me understand campus culture, and the two girls that showed me around that day are now two of my best friends.”

 Currently, Abigail is the Marketing Coordinator at The AAM Group, a a specialty marketing agency dedicated to the automotive aftermarket industry. She works with social media content, video hosting and production, and print media. 

 She feels prepared for the wide array of skills needed for this job because of her preparation in the Mass Communications department, where she says she was pushed out of her comfort zone and gained real world experience. 

“Because of the small class size, I felt like I received the one-on-one attention that helped me understand my goals so that I could better succeed after having the diploma in-hand,” says Abigail. 

Abigail’s advice for future transfer students is to get involved. “Getting involved was the best thing I did at Emory & Henry because it helped my transition to living on campus, and it encouraged me to branch out, learn new things, and meet new people.” 

 While at Emory & Henry, Abigail was a sister of Kappa Phi Alpha, co-host of EHC-TV, and a volunteer at WEHC 90.7. 

“Emory & Henry is a great place to transfer because it’s a small campus with lots of ways to get involved. You will find your family and your place at Emory & Henry.”
