E&H Physician Assistant Studies Faculty Members recognized by Virginia Academy of Physician Assistants

Amanda Fleenor, Director of Didactic Education, and Harry Howe, Adjunct Professor, were both recipients of awards from the Virginia Academy of Physician Assistants (VAPA) at the 2020 VAPA Fall Conference on November 7.

Fleenor, a native of Washington County, Virginia, was recognized as Physician Assistant of the Year for contributions to the profession. She is a coordinator with Mel Leaman Free Clinic at Emory & Henry where she enjoys working with the clinics patients, clinic staff, volunteer medical providers, and other various clinic volunteers. She is certified by the NCCPA and also holds current certifications in BLS for the healthcare provider, ACLS, and PALS.

“Amanda is an excellent educator and always has great student evaluations of the courses she teaches,” says Christy McGhee, Program Director of Physician Assistant Studies. “She’s a great employee and a tremendous asset to Emory & Henry.”

Howe, Adjunct Professor, was honored as the 2020 Humanitarian of the Year. Howe is an ordained minister and went to PA school to earn his degree so that he could do medical mission work in Africa. He works at the Mel Leamon Free Clinic and runs “the bucket brigade” which is a volunteer organization to pack buckets with supplies that are then distributed in the Southeast United States to those in need.

“Our students routinely volunteer to assist him in packing up the buckets,” says McGhee. “Howe teaches our students both by lecturing and by having them with him when he is at the free clinic.”

Howe has also completed mission work across the United States including work with Project Crossroads, flood and hurricane relief, and international mission work in Haiti, Zimbabwe, Uganda and South Sudan.
