Emory & Henry holds ribbon cutting for new exercise trails

On Tuesday, April 13, Emory & Henry held a ribbon cutting to officially recognize three new exercise trails on campus.

As part of Emory & Henry’s Employee Health & Wellness Program, three new walking trails have been identified and marked on Main Campus. The three routes are as follows: Perimeter Trail (1.4 miles), Wiley Trail (.90 miles), and Library Trail (.70 miles). Color-coded distance markers follow the trails at .10 mile intervals.

“We hope to promote outdoor enjoyment, healthy cardiovascular and stress management activities, and a sense of community with the trails,” says Katherine Hanshew, Provost Administration Specialist.

Campus partners who contributed to this project include the Employee Health & Wellness Committee, the Office of Human Resources, the Office of the Provost, Facilities, the Geography department, the Health Center, Campus Recreation, and Marketing & Communications.

The trailhead is located at the Duck Pond wall across from Van Dyke. A directional map is also located here for more information on the trails.

On Wednesday, April 14, a 5K will be held for all fitness levels where attendees can go at their own pace.

Future events on the trails are also planned. There will be Happy Hour: May 12 @ 5 p.m. (How many perimeter loops can you walk/run in 60 minutes?); Geocache: June 9 @ 5 p.m. (in partnership with the Outdoor Program); and Dog Days of Summer Walk: July 21 @ 5 p.m.; Dia de los Muertos Cemetery Walk: November 2 @ 5 p.m. Dates have not been set yet, but plans are underway also for an E&H Scavenger Hunt in August, Bike the Trails in September and the Annual Crop Walk in October. Prizes will be given for each of these themed events.
